With a determination to stay focused on her team in the midst of a less than normal season, junior guard for the girls basketball team Amaya Evans says she and the team are just trying to make it through this crazy time. Being a leader, keeping

Being a leader, keeping her grades in check, and making sure to ask for help when she needs it, are all things Evans is doing so that she can contribute to her team.

“I'm the only upperclassmen that we have this year, so I'm trying to set good examples for my team to follow,” Evans said.

Grades are a factor that determine whether a team member will be able to compete in games, and finishing out the semester with good grades is something Evans holds as a notable accomplishment this year.

However, grades are not the only thing that has played a role in game eligibility this year.

As it has with other things throughout the year, COVID-19 has made its impact on the Geary basketball team as well.

Due to cancellations or delays throughout many schools across the state, Geary has yet to compete in a basketball season that was already meant to begin.

“This year has been very unpredictable with this virus going around, so much so that we are having our first basketball game in January and the season was supposed to start in November,” Evans said. “A lot of my teammates have had COVID and also one of my coaches. I hate how much this virus has affected us as individuals and as a team.” Despite the challenges,

Despite the challenges, Evans suggests that the Lady Bison will go far this year and says she has complete confidence in the team.

Evans also hopes to get some looks from colleges that she might be interested in going to. Along with this she hopes to get a few more wins under her belt against teams that they have not beat in the past.

As for the team, Evans says their goal is to get better overall as well as to win more games than they ever have before.

Evans hopes that she and her team can get a better understanding, a better mindset, and better at the little things as coach Tammy Bates would say.

“Amaya is our only junior on a team with no seniors, so she has had to grow up fast. She has stepped up and has become a great leader,” Bates said. “She is like a sponge, picks up things so quickly and has a huge heart and desire to be her best quickly. With our first game on Monday we looked heavily to Amaya to lead us.” While Evans relies on her

While Evans relies on her team, coaches, and herself, she also relies on her older sister, Kierra Evans, as she draws inspiration from her.

“I've always looked up to Kierra. Whether it's in the real world, on the softball field, or on the basketball court. I hope to make her proud and be the leader for this team as she once was,” Evans said.
