WATONGA – The Watonga Eagles wrestling program held a golf tournament fundraiser at Roman Nose State Park this past Saturday, July 10, drawing a good turnout to help the team with its expenses during the upcoming school year.

Clear, blue skies and mild temperatures greeted the tournament participants, and Watonga wrestling head coach Grant Williams estimates the event raised about $7,000 to $8,000 for the team.

“It was awesome,” Williams said after the event. “We had a really good turnout and a lot of support, so it was good.”

Williams said Ty Ray and his playing partners ended up winning the tournament at 25 under par.

During the Monday Watonga school board meeting, Superintendent Kyle Hilterbran praised the event. “Coach Williams did a great job putting that tournament together,” Hilterbran told the board. “They made good money to put back in their activity account. I’m really proud of them to have pulled that together.”

Proceeds will go to equipment, travel costs, meals, and other expenses associated with the team.

The wrestling program will hold another fundraiser in October, the Chili Cookoff and Dessert Auction, before the team’s first dual meet in December.
