OKLAHOMA CITY – There’s something unique about cattle grazing bright green winter wheat here in Oklahoma. The relationship between farming wheat and cattle brings sustainability for the environment and increased opportunity for Oklahoma’s farmers and ranchers.

The Oklahoma Beef Council and the Oklahoma Wheat Commission partnered to produce a video showcasing this sustainable combination and the video series is available to view now. Visit oklabeef.org and okwheat.org to learn more.

“Wheat and stocker cattle are a combination that is unique to Oklahoma and something consumers might not understand,” said Heather Buckmaster, OBC executive director. “Consumers want to know more about the sustainability of the food they eat, and this partnership brings them high-quality protein and a high-quality whole grain from one piece of land.”

The video features Michael Peters, a wheat and beef farmer from Okarche, Oklahoma, sharing how his family wheat and cattle farm works throughout the year and how this combination benefits consumers.

“Oklahoma is unique in that a large portion of our ag producers grow wheat while raising cattle,” said Mike Schulte, OWC executive director. “The research at Oklahoma State University for dual-purpose cropping systems with wheat and cattle allows Oklahoma farm and ranch families the opportunity to provide two crops at once instead of one, multiplying the benefits of our production system in this region.”

The video also highlights Dr. Brett Carver, professor at Oklahoma State University and wheat breeding specialist, explaining how they have developed varieties of wheat specifically designed for this process – a sturdy plant that cattle can graze and then go on to produce a high-quality grain.

So, as you drive by cattle grazing on green wheat pastures in Oklahoma, know you are seeing a collaboration of Oklahoma agriculture working to bring more to the table through beef, a high-quality protein, and wheat, a whole grain. To learn more about this story visit oklabeef.org or okwheat.org.
