Geary School Board met May 8 in its wrap up for the school year but began by swearing in David Lawson as the board member for seat five. Lawson will complete the unexpired term of Cecil Harrall who resigned in March.
Joy Osborne then discussed what was going on in the elementary school, including farm safety day for fourth graders and staff appreciation week. The staff members were treated to a culinary trip around the world with pastry one morning to symbolize France, pizza as a taste of Italy and orange chicken to represent Hong Kong. Osborne noted all testing had been completed and the repair check lists for summer were being compiled. The last day of school is May 17; graduation is at 10 a.m. May 13.
Summer school and the seamless summer food program will run from June 529. Classes are in session from 8 a.m. until noon, Monday- Thursday.
The high school boasted about a hugely successful prom, with zero incidents and $2,500 worth of gifts bestowed on the student attendees. Students have also attended the Skills USA banquet and celebrated the group’s third place finish at state competition.
The staff is also getting the summer repair checklists ready for the high school and the FFA is preparing for its state convention.
The board authorized or reappointed Superintendent Sean Buchanan as representative for accepting resignations, Title VIII federal funds, representative for the child nutrition and all federal programs, as well as authorizing him to sign checks on the activity funds.
The board went into executive session and accepted the resignations of Jason Parkhurst and Kolton Shipley. It then hired Melvin Wilson to serve as the high school principal, Heath Selcer to teach agriculture and driver’s education, Abbi Bilyeu and Sara Selcer as elementary teachers, Julissa Martinez, a Geary graduate, as a district student advocate, Michael McCullough as band director, and Brenda Louthan as the high school special education teacher.
Julie McCullough was hired as the school nurse and Jessica Helmer as the assistant encumbrance clerk.
