WATONGA – The American Legion will host a Memorial Day service at the IOOF Cemetery on Monday, May 30, at 10 a.m.
Doug Parker, adjutant of American Legion Post 125, said the event will feature patriotic music, speeches and moments of remembrance.
“We’ll raise the flag, do an opening prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance,” Parker said. “Then Katie Ballew is going to sing two or three patriotic songs. We’ll have our firing squad, and then we’ll have Taps,” a traditional bugle call played during American flag ceremonies and military funerals.
Dr. Joe Bryan, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, is also scheduled to give a short talk at the ceremony.
Memorial Day is a time to commemorate the American servicemembers who fought and died in wars throughout our nation’s history. Cemetery observances often include decorating veterans’ graves with flags and holding special services.
Everyone is welcome to attend the IOOF Cemetery event. Parker encouraged attendees to bring lawn chairs. The cemetery is located at 80646 N. 2590 Rd.
