Brushwood Named Outstanding Student

From doing experiments, going to math class, participating in sports, or just seeing her friends at school, Gabriella Brushwood tells us what she likes most about school and why she was chosen as Geary Elementary’s Outstanding Student this month.

Brushwood, who is in the fifth grade, has a cat and a dog named Mila and Raleigh, respectively. Her hobbies include tumbling, crafting, and listening to different types of music. She also said she enjoys math class most as she finds that easiest.

Her school year, which has included doing experiments, making posters, her birthday, basketball games, and cheering have gone very well, Brushwood said.

Her excitement for school doesn’t stop there as she has plenty of other things she is looking forward to, one of which she can’t seem to explain.

“I’m excited to do our assembly,” Brushwood said. “And I don’t have an explanation for it, but I’m excited for our state test!”

Looking even further down the line, Brushwood is anticipating even more excitement as she advances into the next grade.

“I am excited for the sixth grade,” she said. “I’m looking forward to more advanced classes and being able to play softball.”

Brushwood isn’t the only one with excitement in their voice as her principal Sean Buchanan is happy to have her be a part of Geary Elementary.

“Gabby is a well-behaved and hard-working student. She's diligent in her efforts to prepare for school and truly enjoys being around her classmates,” Buchanan said. “I'm so happy she's in our building.”

Brushwood’s overall favorite part of school has been having fun in athletics and getting to hang out with her friends after long breaks at home.

Not everything has been filled with excitement, however. When speaking about virtual-learning, Brushwood had some initial strong feelings on the matter.

“I hate virtual learning with a burning passion. I find it tough since I’m at home,” Brushwood said. “Little cousins might come, I get distracted, pets and I get hungry, and I get tired of sitting in front of my laptop from 8:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. as a fifth grade.”

This upcoming summer vacation may hold some bliss for Brushwood as she said she may go to Florida with her aunt and cousins.

When she’s no longer at school, Brushwood likes to either be in her room with her cat Mila, practicing Spanish, or tumbling on her trampoline.

Putting things to a close, Brushwood described to us what it is that makes her happy.

“My pets, family and friends, sports, and going to school in person make me happy,” she said.
