Canadian County Election Update

Elections of interest to the Canadian County readers of the Watonga Republican include a race between Gray Haller and Jessica Winegeart for the Calumet Public School District board of education and another between Lance Shenold and Patrick Michael Hayes for a seat on the Caddo-Kiowa Tech Center board.

In the Canadian County portion of Geary, there are multiple races. Running for the remainder of the unexpired mayor’s term are Trey Carter, Lois Hicks, Lee Posey and Micah Penrod. Running for the Ward #2 seat are Ashley Hurst, Robert Haley and Tatum Wigington. Seeking the Ward #4 seat are Darrla Golden and Kim Lewis. And vying to complete the unexpired term of council member for Ward #1 are Barbara Diercks and Allison Carter.

In the town of Calumet, four candidates are running to fill two seats with unexpired terms on the board of trustees. Those candidates are Kyle Edwards, Joseph Thornton, Treavor Gibbins and Kaslin Baros.

Although the candidates will represent a particular ward, they are elected at large, meaning any resident is eligible to vote for all open seats. There is no runoff clause in these elections meaning the top vote earner will fill the seat. In the case of two openings, the top two vote getters will be seated.

Early voting will take place March 27-28 at the county elections board and April 1 is election day. Voters do not need a reason to vote early. All voters must present a valid ID such as a drivers license or tribal card, or a voters’ registration card. Those without acceptable ID may be allowed to cast a provisional ballot, which will not be counted until the information can be verified.
