Candidate Profiles District # 3

Editor’s Note: The winner of this primary will face Democratic Candidate Mike Allen in November

Darryl Hicks is a candidate for Blaine County Commission District # 1.

Hicks was born and raised in Geary and graduated from Geary High School. Following graduation, he went to work for Groendyke Ranch, where he stayed for 15 years. Then he worked for Dr. Larry Majors another 15 years and Blaine County for 10 years as an equipment operator.

Hicks is proud of the accomplishments he has made since he was elected in 2002.

“The roads are better than they have ever been. I’ve put down $900,000 in rock since I’ve been in office. I opened the line of sight on American Horse Road by removing the trees.”

He also said there is an 80-foot tin horn being installed on American Horse Road this week.

One challenge Hicks said he didn’t expect was having people come to him to say they have been waiting 25 years for various road maintenance projects.

“I didn’t consider I’d be 25 to 30 years behind instead of current,” he said. He has had to learn how to prioritize problems and projects.

Hicks is currently working with the Geary School District to do dirt work for the school construction and the Hydro Fire Department doing dirt work for the new fire station being built there. He has also mowed the right of way for Geary down to the county line.

Hicks hopes next term to lay asphalt thick enough to handle oil field traffic on all roads that are currently chip sealed. “Chip seal is not designed for oil field traffic,” he said.

His plan is to asphalt three feeder roads and group truck traffic there to lighten the traffic on other roads, some that are dirt today.

Despite a catastrophic fire that destroyed the freshly completed county barn in Geary, Hicks remains optimistic.

“Getting going with the building destroyed is time consuming,” he said. “But the morale at the district is amazing. We all get along. They are excited to show up for work and excited to go to work.”
