The Watonga Chamber of Commerce and the organizers of the Watonga Cheese Festival issued a statement Wednesday that the 2020 event scheduled for the second weekend in October has been cancelled.

“We at the Watonga Cheese Festival are sad to announce that due to the uncertainty of the Covid-19 virus and the effects from it, we feel it is best to cancel the 2020 Watonga Cheese festival! PLEASE SAVE THE DATE AND JOIN US FOR THE 44TH WATONGA CHEESE FESTIVAL SET FOR OCT. 8TH & 9TH, 2021!” For more information on community events, follow the Watonga Chamber of Commerce on Facebook and the Watonga Cheese Festival Facebook page" the statement read.

The 2019 event was hailed as the best in many years, with a surge in attendance, vendors and food/drink tents. Work had already begun on the 2020 festival, with the call issued in March for committee members and volunteers. That, of course, was before the Covid-19 pandemic stole headlines around the country.
