Cupp, Kikkoman Scholarships Awarded

Watonga High School senior Piper Gallagher has been named as the recipient of the 2023 Doris Lewis Cupp Family Memorial Scholarship.

With an overall 4.0 GPA, Gallgher is the valedictorian of this year's WHS graduating class. She will receive a $3,000 scholarship award to support her first year of studies at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, where she plans to pursue a degree in Studio Art and participate in track and field.

At WHS, Gallagher played multiple sports in addition to serving on the student council, Yearbook, and Broadcasting Club.

Based on academic achievement, Piper was selected for membership in both the National Honor Society and the Oklahoma Honor Society.

She was selected as Student of the Year in 2021.

The Doris Lewis Cupp Family Memorial Scholarship was created by the children of Doris Cupp to honor their mother, a lifelong educator who taught at Watonga High School from 1979-1993.

Each of the Cupp children graduated from WHS: Carri (1981), Dondi (1983), Kimbri (1987), Terry (1988), and Kelli and Sean (1991).

Each year, the Doris Lewis Cupp Family Memorial Scholarship will recognize one or more graduating seniors who have excelled in a wide-range of academic and extracurricular activities at Watonga High School.

Rita Clewell, a student at Watonga High School, is one of 14 high school students from across the United States to be selected as a 2023 recipient of the prestigious Kikkoman FCCLA Scholarship.

Founded in 1945, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America has for nearly 80 years promoted the goal of preparing students nationwide for leadership positions in the home and workplace.

The Kikkoman FCCLA Scholarship is funded by the Kikkoman Corporation and is open to students who are dues-paying members of FCCLA.

Over the summer scholarship recipients will spend six weeks in Japan with a Japanese host family to learn and experience the culture firsthand.

This scholarship also grants recipients the opportunity to attend a Japanese secondary school for around one week as a guest student.
