More than 100 Geary High School alumni met in the Stegall Long Field House on Memorial Day to reminisce, catch up and honor the classes of 1970 and 1971.
Monday marked the first Geary reunion in two years, as the annual event was canceled in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic. Last year’s 50th-anniversary class was honored along with this year’s, as well as the 25-year and 75-year anniversary classes.
The event featured a lunch, an auction, and a social hour before. The auction went to benefit the Geary Alumni Association.
Patsy Leck, a 1981 graduate with the alumni association, said it was nice to see everyone again after a year away.
“It is good to get everybody back together,” Leck said. “We had a lot more turnout this year than we have in the past.”
Anita Carter said the alumni association is trying to draw younger members who graduated more recently and get them involved, as well.
“For 75 years, they’ve only had a banquet on Memorial Day,” Carter said. “Well, we’re trying to pull in a lot of new faces, and we’re toying with having a cornhole tournament, or something along those lines, at a different time of year.”
“From like 1982 to 2012, I don’t think there’s anybody (here),” Leck added. “So we’re trying to get crowd in between.”
Leck said Monday’s wellattended event had about 130 RSVPs in advance, but something like 150 actual attendees.
