GEARY – The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is looking into a police shooting that occurred in Geary last Wednesday, Oct. 13

Ȯne man, age 46, was killed by a single shot from a Geary officer after he lunged forward with a knife, officials said.

According to the OSBI, the incident began around 4:28 p.m. Wednesday when a Geary officer saw a man holding a knife and “stopped to talk to him” near I-40 and the state Highway 281 onramp. The man “would not follow commands to put the knife down.”

An off-duty officer “saw what was happening” and stopped to assist the first, the OSBI said. They were soon joined by a third officer, but the man still would not drop his knife.

The third officer was “attempting to deploy his taser,” officials said, “but could not get a clear shot.” When the armed man saw the taser, he “lunged” at the off-duty officer and one shot was fired.

The OSBI did not specify which officer fired the shot.

Though the officers attempted to “render aid on scene,” the man died before paramedics arrived.

As of Tuesday, his name had not been released pending notification of his relatives.

The OSBI says that, as with all shootings, its “initial understanding of the facts and circumstances may evolve over the course of the investigation.” When the investigation is finished, the OSBI will submit a report to the district attorney’s office.

It is against the OSBI’s policy to release the names of officers involved unless charges are filed, it said.
