GEARY – One woman was flown to the hospital by medical helicopter after she was ejected from a car that swerved to avoid an animal in Canadian County.

Geary resident Gari Bates, 28, was admitted to OU Medical Center in good condition with trunk, arm and leg injuries, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

The wreck reportedly occurred Monday night about 9:20 p.m. on Methodist Road, 1 mile south of Geary. The OHP says Bates was the passenger in a 2001 Ford Explorer driven by an Oklahoma City man. The man was traveling north when he swerved to miss an animal in the roadway, overcorrected and slid to the left into a ditch.

The Explorer rolled once, plowed through a barbed-wire fence and landed on its wheels, officials said. Bates was ejected about 10 feet.

The driver was wearing his seatbelt, but Bates was not, officials said. They said the driver was traveling at an “unsafe speed,” as well.

The OHP was assisted in the crash response by the Geary Fire Department and the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office.
