A Lamp to My Feet

Some of you may be wondering why I am spending so many lessons on Zechariah. I basically have 2 reasons: 1. It is a Bible book whose teachings are twisted by some to provide Scripture to justify what they are teaching about things yet in the future. 2. It has been a long time since I studied the book myself.

We are now in chapter 4:1 10 which is the 5th vision. It concerns a lampstand and two olive trees. The lampstand has a bowl on top of it with pipes or tubes coming out of it to each of the seven lamps. There are 2 olive trees supplying oil for the lamps.

God tells us what this vision means in 4:56, “Then the angel who talked with me answered and said to me, “Do you not know what these are?” And I said, “No, my lord.” 6 So he answered and said to me: “This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ Says the LORD of hosts.” God continues to explain the meaning of the vision in 4:89, “Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying: “The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this temple; His hands shall also finish it. Then you will know that the LORD of hosts has sent Me to you.” Why would anyone want to give this vision a different meaning than God did?’After all, He is the one that wrote the book.

I like the statement made in 4:10, “For who has despised the day of small things?” Our society teaches us that we aren’t successful unless we have done something big. Sometimes we ignore the small jobs God gives to us because we feel that something bigger must be something better. “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might.”
