More Questions Than Answers in Second Shooting

Very little information has been released about the second shooting in Watonga in recent months, each with a teenaged victim.

According to Chief of Police Beth Massey, a juvenile was shot at a home on the east side of town early Sunday morning. Other than to say officers from Watonga Police Department, Blaine County Sheriff’s Office and Oklahoma Bureau of Investigations responded to the scene, Massey could release no details. She did indicate, however, the investigation has been turned over to OSBI.

Blaine County Sheriff Travis Daughtery was similarly close-mouthed about the event other than to confirm the investigation has been turned over to OSBI and that local law enforcement officers did clear the premises after the incident had been reported.

However, posts on social media indicate the victim is 15-year-old JaNya Burton. The post reads that someone shot the youngster as she slept and she was struck seven times. It asks all information be forwarded to the Watonga Police Department.

The Watonga Republican contacted the OSBI, but received no reply as of press time.

The first shooting in Watonga took place in October. A 15-year-old juvenile, identified through social media as Isaac Sanders, was shot in the head, but survived and is expected to make a full recovery. Some sources indicate he was shot in the same home and the same room as the second victim.
