OKLAHOMA CITY – A new national roofing report from Verisk shows that Oklahoma continues to face some of the most severe and frequent hail damage in the United States. With nearly half of all roofs hit by severe hail, the findings highlight why mitigation initiatives like the Strengthen Oklahoma Homes (SOH) program, which uses the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) FORTIFIED™ standards, are critical for protecting homeowners and reducing long-term repair costs.
According to the report:
•Over the last four years, 49.7% of Oklahoma roofs were impacted by severe hail — the highest rate nationwide.
•Average roof replacement costs reached $17,631 in 2025, up 33% from recent years.
•In 2025, severe hail impacted 20% or more of roofs in 16 states, with Oklahoma being the highest nationally at 64.7%.
•Nearly 29% of asphalt-shingle homes have fewer than four years of useful life remaining.
•Roofs with less than five years of remaining life can take 50% more damage in severe weather.
This data confirms that the frequency of convective storms and hail events is contributing to the increased costs Oklahoma consumers are seeing.
FORTIFIED™ and similar resilient roofing standards have been shown to:
•Reduce wind-related damage by 40–70%
•Cut storm-related claim frequency by 55– 74%
•Improve home resale value by about 6.8%
•Add only 0.56% to construction costs while delivering long-term savings “This report shows that mitigation not only works but also helps homeowners save money in the long term and generate more value for their homes,” Insurance Commissioner Glen Mulready said. “Homeowners are saving an average of $720 per year on their insurance. Don’t miss your chance to receive a grant of up to $10,000 through the SOH program to unlock these savings.”
Since the program’s launch in early 2025, more than $4 million has been invested, resulting in 400 FORTIFIED™ roofs.
