SENIOR CENTER NEWS

Here we are with the school year coming to an end. Mothers are thinking about what to do to entertain kids this summer and kids are thinking about sleeping late and a never-ending vacation. Kids will love to get involved with the local library summer programs. They begin June 1 with a kick-off to the theme of “Uncover a Story.” This will start at noon at Library Park, and I encourage all of you to attend.

The Watonga Senior Citizens Center will be closed on Monday, May 25, for Memorial Day. It is observed on the last Monday of May each year. This was originally called ‘Decoration Day,’ and originated after the Civil War to honor fallen soldiers by decorating their graves with flowers. After World War 1, the day expanded to honor all American military personnel who died in all wars, not just the Civil War. Congress established the last Monday in May as the official federal holiday in 1971. May likely chosen because flowers would be in bloom nationwide.

We honor the heroes who gave their all for freedom. Land of the free, because of the brave. Remember with gratitude the sacrifice of those who served. Gone but never forgotten— their courage lives on. God Bless Us All!
