EWS
We received some much- needed rain last week, but following it, we have received unbelievably high temperatures. Do you think we will remember this heat wave in February? Probably not. It appears that summer is here. We will be celebrating our nation’s 250th anniversary. Most of us have never known anything but freedom, and we are glad of that. Many folks have planned picnics, pool parties and firework displays. Let us all celebrate!
Come join us at the Watonga Senior Citizens Center for lunch any day. We eat from 11 am to 12:30 pm, each day except Wednesday, when the Kiwanis Club meets. That day we eat from 11 am to 12 noon. Call us at 580-623-4511 any morning before 10 am for home delivery. After much discussion and considering the alternatives, we have made the difficult decision to raise the price of our meals to $8. This will go into effect on July 1, 2026. This price is still a bargain, and we request that you still support us.
Our upcoming menu: Thursday, July 2 Chicken Strips Friday, July 3 Closed Monday, July 6 Chicken Strips Tuesday, July 7 Sausage and Sauerkraut Wednesday, July 8 Steak Fingers (Kiwanis Meets) Thursday, July 9 Goulash Friday, July 10 Ham & Sweet Potatoes
Our meals were delivered last week by: Teresa Bryan, Sharon Barnes, Brenda Stein, Janice Hood and Vernon Brickman. Thanks to them.
Louise Cooper and Estalene Teply were our quilters last week.
Perry Jump paid his annual membership to the Center.
Independence Day was designated as a federal holiday in 1870. Eventually, in 1941, the 4th of July was promoted to a paid federal holiday, which is still true today. Cannons and guns were used in early celebrations, and have been replaced by fireworks due to safety concerns. Americans spend an estimated $1.5 billion on fireworks for the 4th of July celebrations each year. An estimated 150 million hot dogs are consumed every year on Independence Day. Watermelon, popsicles and ice cream also round out the 4th of July foods.
No matter how you celebrate, remember the Watonga Senior Citizens Center is open and welcomes you to eat with us! Happy 4th of July!
