One of our long-standing members of the Watonga Senior Citizens Center gave me a brochure entitled “100 Years Ago Back in 1926”. Thanks to Dolores Trumbley for these reminders of the past! Calvin Coolidge was the president and the US population was 117.4 million. On August 6, Fox Film Corporation released “Don Juan”, the first feature- length film with synchronized sound effects and a musical score. On November 17, the U.S. Route 66 Highway was established, connecting Chicago to California and becoming an iconic symbol of the American Road Trip. “Winnie-The-Pooh” was published by A. A. Milne. The cost of a new house was $6,800; a new car $880; a gallon of gas $0.25; a postage stamp $0.03; and a dozen eggs $0.19.
My goodness! How things have changed in 100 years. One thing that hasn’t changed is the idea of a home-cooked meal at lunchtime. This can be found at the Watonga Senior Citizens Center Monday through Friday, from 11 am to 12:30 pm, each day except Wednesday. That day, when the Kiwanis Club meets at the Center, we eat from 11 am to 12 noon.
Our menu is: Thursday, July 16 Liver and Onions Friday, July 17 Fried Chicken Monday, July 20 Chicken Strips Tuesday, July 21 Spaghetti and Meatballs Wednesday, July 22 Chicken Spaghetti (Kiwanis Meets) Thursday, July 23 Steak Fingers Friday, July 24 Chicken Fried Steak
Call us at 580-6234511 any morning before 10 am for home delivery. We have raised the price of our meals to $8 each. Last week we had meals delivered by Susan Shrader, Connie George, Lisa Nelson, Brenda Stein, Janice Hood and Vernon Brickman. Thanks to them all.
We received memorial contributions for Jim Thompson from Lonnie and Jenni Rickey and Karen Biers.
Our quilters last week were Louise Cooper, Estalene Teply and Terri Crawford.
The nurses from Mercy Hospital Watonga will be at the Center on Friday, July 17, at 9:45 am to take blood pressures and glucose levels. This is a free service and we need to take advantage of it.
Come visit us and the Watonga Senior Citizens Center and dine with us or just visit with us. We have a large collection of books you may borrow to read and craft books to inspire you. See you soon!
