WATONGA – The Blaine County Sheriff’s Office held a Christmas party on Friday, Dec. 10, and awarded several deputies for going above and beyond this past year.

Sheriff Travis Daugherty told the Blaine County commissioners about the awards during their weekly meeting on Monday, Dec. 13.

“We decided to give some awards and start giving credit where it is due,” Daugherty told the commissioners. Awarded deputies included:

• Eric Denning: Deputy of the Year

• Jessica Montoya: Detention Officer of the Year

• Cody Petty: Communication Officer of the Year

• Briston Lowry: Bold as a Lion Award

Daugherty said Lowry earned the “Bold as a Lion Award” for his “dedication to our child sex crime investigations.”

“He told me that he felt like these children that do not have a voice don’t need a man to represent them, they need a lion,” Daugherty said. “That really stuck with me. He has become that lion, and has done extraordinary work in (investigating) child sex crimes. We felt like that credit was definitely due.”

Later, Daugherty said he has been in communication with the City of Watonga and the county’s selected architects about possible locations for a new Blaine County Jail, should it not be constructed on the jail’s current site, and the idea of potentially housing city and county first responders together one day.

In their main agenda Monday, the county commissioners:

• Approved an interlocal agreement between Blaine County and the Southwest Oklahoma Regional 911 Association (SWOR 911) for GeoSafe Mobile dispatching software for county emergency agencies

• Approved an interlocal agreement between the Blaine County sheriff and Washita County for the housing of inmates

• Accepted a $500 donation for the sheriff’s department from Marathon Oil

• Approved a request from the Longdale Fire Department to purchase radio equipment from Chickasaw Personal Communications for $2,511.08

• Approved a request from LFD to purchase decals, designs and labor from Goliath Graphics for $510

• Approved a request to encumber monies for annual GeoSafe fees to SWOR 911, with the nine fire departments and four EMS districts in the county each paying $277.77

• And approved road crossing permits.

The county commissioners meet every Monday morning at 9 a.m. in the Blaine County Courthouse.
