The city of Watonga is once again faced with an open city council seat. At its regular January meeting, the council voted to call for a special election.
According to Blaine County Elections Board Secretary Brenda Rice, candidates interested in filing for Ward # 2 can file Declarations of Candidacy beginning 8 a.m. Monday, February 2. Filing will continue until Feb. 4 at 5 p.m.
Candidate filing packets are available on the state election board website at https://oklahoma.gov/elections/ candidates/ candidate-filing.html and at the county election board. Prospective candidates must also provide a valid voter registration verification form. The forms are available by logging in to the OK Voter Portal or at the county election board office in the basement of the Blaine County courthouse.
Information on the verification form and the declaration of candidacy form must match.
Contests of candidacy must be filed by 5 p.m. Feb. 6 and only by another candidate for the office, unless the candidate is running unopposed. In the case of contest of an unopposed candidate, contact the election board secretary.
The special election is scheduled for April 7.
