Sports Scholarship Recipients Named

The Watonga Republican/Geary Star is dedicated to helping youth achieve a stronger foundation for future learning and career selection.

We know many worthy students face financial difficulties when it comes to college tuition. Our scholarships can contribute to the success of ambitious and dedicated students who might otherwise face a financial hardship associated with college.

This is one reason we created these scholarships with the help of local businesses. Sports sponsorships enabled us to cover local student athletes’ success on the field over the past year.

Qualifying students who applied filled out our application form and submitted an essay.

This year has been unlike any other, and the scholarship process reflected that as well. Only students from Watonga High School submitted applications for the program. As such, the newspaper has selected Rogelia Camarena, Halie Elston, Ethan Henderson and Emma Hussey as recipients. All are 2020 WHS graduates.

Camarena plans to attend the University of Oklahoma, majoring in biology. She played basketball and ran track and cross country. She was part of the three-time academic state championship in track and was a member of the National Honor Society and Student Council.

Elston plans to attend Oklahoma State University at Oklahoma City, majoring in cardiovascular sonography and biology. She ran cross country and track and had a 4.0 GPA. She was a member of the National Honor Society and a class valedictorian.

Henderson plans to attend Southwestern Oklahoma State University majoring in pre-pharmacy. He played football and baseball and wrestled. He is active in his church youth group and was a member of the National Honor Society. Hussey plans to attend

Hussey plans to attend Murray State and major in agriscience technology. She played basketball, softball and ran track and cross country. She was a state track qualifier for three years and a champion in her junior year as well as a cross country state championship team member as a senior.
