STEAM Camp 2023 Nominations Open

Oklahoma students will have the opportunity again to experience the SAGE STEAM Camp at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford during the 2023 summer.

The Southwest Alliance for Girls Enrichment (SAGE) Committee members are looking for students from across the state who are currently in seventh grade and interested in exploring STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts/Humanities, and Mathematics). The camp is geared toward students— especially females—who may have limited access to STEAM-related activities and may truly benefit from this experience, personally or academically. “We have experienced change and challenges over the past five years, including COVID-19, different programming, new collaborators, adding the Educators Program, etc. Through it all, the SAGE STEAM camp remains a place where girls can learn and grow, meet others who share their passions and let their true colors show,” said Dr. Lisa Appeddu, camp director.

Students will stay overnight in university residence halls during the week of camp, June 11 - 17. They will participate in hands-on activities, interact with role models from STEAM fields and travel off-campus to experience STEAM on-site. Students will also learn about career opportunities that feature and integrate the STEAM fields.

Please contact sagesteamcamp@ gmail.com for nominations past this deadline. Nominations also may be provided by Girl Scout leaders, BSA leaders, or other adults leading an organization who know the student and are not related to them. After being nominated, students will complete an online application by February 15 and then undergo an introduction phone interview in March. Up to 50 students will be selected to attend the SAGE STEAM Camp at SWOSU.

Campers pay a non-refundable $200 registration fee; the remaining $900 in costs per camper is covered by grants and generous supporters, which include personal donors, Oklahoma businesses such as Devon Energy, and community organizations. Reduced registration fees and payment plans are available as needed to reduce financial burden. Tax-deductible donations to the SAGE STEAM Camp may be made via the SWOSU Foundation. Both in-kind and monetary contributions are welcome.

Appeddu added, “We appreciate the ongoing support of SWOSU, the City of Weatherford, Devon Energy, and other organizations and individuals who make it possible for us to inspire the next generation in STEAM.”
