Stray Calf Causes Wreck Near Hitchcock

HITCHCOCK – Three Geary residents were involved in a rear-end crash Thursday morning near Hitchcock when stray calf on the road distracted the drivers.

The wreck occurred around 7 a.m. on OK-8 northeast of Hitchcock, according to information released by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. Sandra Gutierrez, 39, was driving a Chevrolet Equinox south when officials say she slowed down and turned on her flashers because a calf was “running loose along the road.”

Alejandra Gonzalez, 24, was a passenger in the Equinox.

A trailing southbound vehicle, a Chevrolet Cruze driven by 24-year-old Rebecca Allen, rear-ended the Equinox. Officials said Allen was distracted by the calf.

Gutierrez and Gonzalez were transported to Mercy Hospital in Watonga by Watonga EMS. They were both treated and released.

Allen was pinned in her vehicle for 45 minutes before being extracted by the Hitchcock Fire Department. She was transported to Watonga by Okeene EMS and then airlifted to Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City.

She was admitted in stable condition with a leg injury, officials said.

Allen was not wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred, they added, but the women in the Equinox were.

The owner of the calf “is unknown at this time.” The OHP was assisted in the crash response by the Blaine County Sheriff’s Office, Okeene EMS, Watonga EMS, Air Evac and the Hitchcock Fire Department.
