Individuals who have attended high school but left without a high school diploma because of a previous law that required all Oklahoma high school students to pass four of five end of instruction tests now have a way to get that degree.
Many students around the state were affected by the law, but Oklahoma House Bill 3218 removed the requirement on passing the four tests. Other assessment measures were implemented.
Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford is seeking to help anyone who was negatively affected by the previous requirement and will help guide individuals in the process to be awarded their high school diploma, according to a press release.
Ed Klein, chair of the SWOSU Department of Education, said people who would have graduated and received a high school diploma back then were granted approval by the Oklahoma State Department of Education to request and be granted a high school diploma retroactively by their high school so long as all other graduation requirements had been met.
“There are students out there who were affected by this scenario, and we want them to know there is a pathway now for the pursuit of additional educational opportunities,” Klein said.
