The Canton Tiger Foundation, a dedicated nonprofit organization, plays a vital role in supporting Canton school children as they embark on their academic journeys through National History Day competitions. Each year, thousands of Oklahoma students—motivated by teachers statewide—participate in the Oklahoma National History Day (OkNHD) program.
OkNHD is an esteemed academic program for students in grades 6–12, forming a part of the larger National History Day initiative that draws more than 750,000 participants nationwide annually.
Canton schools have experienced notable achievements in these competitions, with students earning the opportunity to showcase their knowledge and talents on the national stage. The Canton Tiger Foundation proudly funds travel for these students, ensuring they can compete and represent the community at this prestigious event.
This year, USG Southard used the company’s Give Local Donation program to support the efforts of the Canton Tiger Foundation with a $5,000 donation to help with travel costs. The plant’s Engagement Council oversaw the nomination process for selecting the beneficiary of the charitable donation. The council is made up of members representing all plant departments, who work together with their colleagues on community engagement-related projects. The Engagement Council strives to give back generously and equally to the local small towns surrounding the plant, recognizing that many plant employees are parents of Canton students or are Canton alumni themselves.
After careful consideration, the council identified Canton as the town to receive this year’s support and reached consensus as a team to recommend the Canton Tiger Foundation as the recipient. The foundation uses these donations to support the Canton History Day event, ensuring local children can participate and excel.
