In tandem with the citywide cleanup April 13-17, there will be a volunteer alley cleanup on Saturday, April 18.
This is an effort to clear alleys of longstanding trash, junk and brush.
Residents are advised alleys have already been surveyed to determine what is along the backside of properties and are asked not to place other garbage and brush there. Those should be placed next to the poly cart on the streetside by 6 a.m. on your regular pickup day the week of April 13-17.
The pickup will begin at 8 a.m. and conclude about 2 p.m. Those who wish to volunteer may do so by calling the light and water office at (580) 623-4669 before April 8. Volunteering ahead of time allows the city to be prepared with the appropriate number of safety vests.
On April 18, volunteers should arrive at the Street and Alley department, 321 E. First St. In addition to volunteers, the work will be assisted by use of city equipment. This means heavy items will be lifted mechanically.
“We don’t want anyone to be injured or even have sore muscles the next day,” said Street and Alley director Justin Woldridge.
City Manager Leroy Alsup noted that it was once common in small towns for businesses or civic clubs to hold cleanup days, but those events have dwindled. The townwide cleanup and volunteer day, he said, are a first step toward making the city cleaner and more appealing.
