Watonga’s own Opportunities, Inc., was recognized last week in the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma’s Partner Spotlight.
While the community support program has been in place since 1968, it became a food bank partner in 2001. The facets of Opportunities that make it stand out, the spotlight noted, was that it offers many services outside the food pantry including Medicare enrollment assistance, help filing taxes and has an on-site thrift store.
Another unique attribute is that the Watonga Opportunities grows much of its own produce such as tomatoes, herbs, squash, cucumbers and beans.
Executive Director Carla Flynn noted it was fantastic to get noticed and praised for the assistance the organization offers to the community. She also expressed her gratitude for the support the partnership with the regional food bank offers.
Beyond supporting elders and low income residents, Opportunities frequently posts its excess supplies of produce on its social media page, offering it free to anyone who stops by and picks some up.
