Senior News Center & Resource Guide

October is here! The first thing that usually comes to mind is Halloween— jack- olanterns on porches, kids in costumes and spooky and sweet. But October is more than that. It is a month filled with crisp air, crunchy leaves, cozy sweaters, and the smell of pumpkins and cinnamon. It is pumpkin season (the US produces1.5 billion pounds of pumpkins each year). It is World Series month for baseball; daylight savings time ends; breast cancer awareness month; billions of dollars are spent on candy; we celebrate Columbus Day, or Indigenous Peoples’ Day; and of course, the Watonga Cheese Festival!

The 50th Annual Watonga Cheese Festival is Friday and Saturday, October 9 and 10. The official start is at 1:00 pm on Friday BUT that day from 11 am to 1 pm, the Watonga Senior Citizens Center starts the festivities with a Chicken and Noodle Dinner. We will serve chicken and noodles, mashed potatoes, green beans, salad, homemade rolls, pumpkin dessert and a drink for $8! Come join us for a delicious dinner, then later check out the exhibits, cheese tasting lines, food trucks and vendors.

MENU:

We eat each day, except Wednesday, from 11 am to 12:30 pm. On Wednesdays, when Kiwanis meets, we eat from 11 am to 12 noon. Call the Center any morning before 10 am for home delivery. Our meals were delivered last week by Teresa Bryan, Sharon Barnes (2 days), Mary May, Janice Hood and Vernon Brickman. We are very grateful for their volunteering to do this each week!

We collect Best Choice labels, and received a good donation of them from Smokey Rogers. For each 1,000 coupons collected, we receive $60. So save those labels and bring them to the Center anytime.

Our quilter last week was Louise Cooper and she is working on a quilt belonging to the late Gene Matli.

We received a memorial donation from Mary May for Esther Arnold.

We are gearing up for the Cheese Festival and hope to see you at our Chicken and Noodle Dinner then later at the attractions!
