No one was quite sure how graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2020 could be pulled off while maintaining safe social distancing in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic. Administrators at Watonga High School had begun making plans for a virtual graduation and placing the pre-recorded event on websites and social media pages.
Then the state began to ease its restrictions on gatherings and a survey of the seniors gathered their wants and suggestions, sending the school into a very different direction for graduation. Rather than a virtual commencement, live ceremonies will be held in a very different venue.
Beginning at 10 a.m. June 6, families and friends will be seated on the football field at Eagle Stadium. Each senior will be allowed 10 reserved seats close to the home stands. Other attendees may seat themselves behind reserved seating, observing social distancing guidelines. The visitors’ stands will also be avail able for seating, again following the six-foot rule for those from different households.
Graduates will be seated in the home stands. Photos in cap and gowns and class photos will be made at 9 a.m. June 4 either on the football field, weather permitting, or in the gym. Anyone with questions should check the school website or visit its social media pages.
