Upchego Joins Geary School Board

GEARY – Waylan Upchego, a Geary pastor, was sworn in Monday as the newest member of the Geary Public Schools Board of Education.

Upchego, the former Geary chief of police, was the only applicant for the position recently vacated by Virginia Richey.

Richey’s resignation left the board with only three members, the minimum needed for a quorum. Upchego brings the board back to four members, with one seat still vacant.

Though Richey had recently opposed the district’s move to start working with an architectural firm on possible new construction, she wrote on Facebook that her resignation was due only to her own time constraints and wished the district and school board well.

Upchego joins Cecil Harrall, Afton Jameson and board president Jason Bernhardt. He is the pastor of Geary’s All Tribes Baptist Church.
