HINTON – The Hinton Board of Trustees met on Tuesday evening, Feb. 15, to discuss agenda items for the town, the Hinton Public Works Authority and the Hinton Recreation and Tourism Trust. It was the trustees’ second meeting that day, after they gathered with representatives of the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes that afternoon to discuss development north of downtown near the tribe’s Sugar Creek Casino.
“They outlined their plans for some housing west of the casino,” said town administrator Shanon Pack. The development will also include a childcare center, he said.
The Wichitas are following the town’s northern sewer line extension project, which will enable further development once complete. They first announced the housing development last spring.
Trustees agreed Tuesday to renew a contract with the Hinton Street Races; the Town of Hinton will purchase insurance for the event and be reimbursed by the street races. The town ended its formal oversight of the street races last year, but continues to work closely with the event that draws hundreds to Hinton during warm-weather months.
The first Hinton Street Races of 2022 are scheduled for Saturday, March 26.
The town also renewed its agreement with the local Little League for use of baseball and softball fields.
The trustees have debated for months what to do about the old Masonic building on Main Street that requires asbestos remediation before it can be torn down. On Tuesday the trustees agreed to spend about $108,000 to complete the demolition. The town will split the cost with the Hinton Economic Development Authority.
Trustees also approved a $99,300 project to repair a lagoon’s liner at the Great Plains Correctional Facility. Easy Lay Liners submitted the winning bid, Pack said.
Hinton Public Schools Superintendent Marcy Derryberry was also on hand Tuesday to tell trustees more about the bond issue the district will run in April.
The trustees will meet again on Tuesday, March 15, at 6 p.m.
