The tall northwest wall of the Watonga Church of the Nazarene toppled in the overnight hours before Wednesday, May 11, after thunderstorms rolled through the area. The church's lead pastor, the Rev. Kason Oakes, was at the church Wednesday morning with some volunteers to assess the damage and start cleanup. Oakes said he heard from locals that the wall came down about 4 a.m. Watonga Police Chief John Noriega said the collapse may have been caused by the wind; there were no apparent char marks associated with a lightning strike. The church was scheduled to host Watonga High School's baccalaureate service on Wednesday evening.
