Ola Kirk was a 77-year-old grandmother when she was raped and beaten to death in her Geary home in 1983. Although at the time of the murder, investigators knew of Lester Blackbear, they did not move ahead with a case against him. It took the intervention of Kirk’s great-grandchild to kick the system into high gear. She located Blackbear living in Arizona as an unregistered sex offender. He was extradited back to Oklahoma and charged in Kirk’s death 28 years after the fact, only to die in jail two weeks before court proceedings were set to begin. DNA evidence on items in Kirk’s home matched DNA of Blackbear. The family felt they had closure even though it remains listed as a dismissed case.
