The Watonga School Board met Jan. 13 in special session to let bids on construction of new buildings financed by the recent bond issue.
The bid issue was a tricky business, according to Van Storm, project manager for Joe D. Hall. The rapidly changing costs of goods and materials for the construction had everyone, the district, project manager and contractors, jumpy. If the bids were locked in now and the price of concrete, lumber, wire and the like soared, the contractors could lose their shirts.
If the project manager awarded bids and the vendors add-ons at additional costs, the project could go over budget. And while the district is currently flush with cash, no one wants to spend more on a project than was previously discussed.
Storm said the district could continue to make changes in the projects right up until the end, calling it a fluid process.
