An accidental gun discharge at a local school is under investigation.
According to Blaine County Undersheriff Eric Dunnigan, the incident took place Thursday at Geary Elementary School as school was dismissing for the day.
Geary Police Chief Cecil Harrall was on site, as is often the case when school takes in or lets out. The incident occurred, Dunnigan said, when a passenger in a parked vehicle moved the weapon to allow a student to enter the vehicle. That vehicle was parked near the school so that the driver could pick up their student and escort them to the parked auto. It was not on school property.
When the weapon was shifted, it discharged, striking the vehicle parked next to it. No one was injured in the incident. It is unclear who owned the weapon. Some parents who learned about the accidental discharge later were unhappy they had not been informed the misadventure had taken place on or near school grounds.
The matter has been turned over to the Blaine County Sheriff’s Office for investigation.
