The prom is set for April 29 for Geary High School. And other than who is going with whom, the big burning question of the day is will the students be allowed to drive private vehicles. That question was brought up at the March 3 regular school board meeting.
Previously, students met at the high school and were transported to the dance venue via bus. However, the request has been made to end that practice, or at least allow those who want to drive to do so.
“Is the school liable in the worst-case scenario?” wondered board president Jason Bernhardt.
“I don’t see a problem, as long as we keep our checks and balances in place once they get there,” said board member Afton James.
Prom-goers are subject to breath alcohol checks as they enter the dance venue and if a student chooses to leave the building, they are not granted re-entry.
“I mean, Yukon and Mustang drive to Oklahoma City,” James added. Eventually, the matter was tabled until the district could determine what its liability would be if students are allowed to drive. There is ample time to revisit the topic prior to prom time.
In other business, the board agreed to hire Cindi Horn as a special education certified teacher and her spouse, Kenny Horn as an administrator. It was undetermined where Kenny Horn will serve.
Other news included new signs being set for the administration offices, now located in back of the field house, and work beginning on the wrestling room renovations. Work on a teacherage in town has been completed and construction on a storage facility near the elementary school has started. That project is being funded through a memorial behest of a Geary graduate who passed away recently.
