It was a busy, busy week here in the Harris household.
Monday started mundane enough. The Kiwanis were holding their annual Pancake Days so I was thrilled that it would be a day I wouldn't have to think of something for supper. We like to support the local charities and anytime I can get out of cooking, I'm all in. It's a win-win for me. I guess that's because I barely like to cook although I do love to bake since that involves sweet things and I rarely have to thaw out something to prepare it. Having to decide what to make far enough ahead to have everything on hand is my idea of a nightmare which explains our freezer full of food I (a) never remember we have, (b) forget to thaw or (3) have no idea how I want to prepare it even if I get it out in time. That also explains my dependency on frozen one-pound bags of ground beef I buy at the local big box subscription store. It's fast and easy to thaw in the microwave and so very versatile even though I tend to make the same few dishes out of it. To clean out the freezer, one of these days I'm going to have to take everything out, throw it into a pot and make David 'Guess what you just ate?' I have no imagination when it comes to variety in the kitchen. Anyway, David is absolutely no help. I was hoping to find an ally when our granddaughter moved in but, alas, it was not to be. She's just as indecisive as we are. That's one trait I wish she hadn't inherited.
When it comes to deciding what to eat our conversations go something like this: Me: 'What do you want for supper?'
David: 'What do you want?'
Me: 'If I knew that, I wouldn't be asking you.'
David: 'Doesn't matter to me. Whatever you want.'
Me: 'Give me a little help here, will ya?'
David: 'I don't care. It's up to you.'
Me: 'We had that last night.'
I'm sure you can understand my frustration.
It ended up being a moot point when our daughter-in-law texted later in the afternoon with a little 'emergency' and needed me to help her daughter watch the boys while she helped a friend. Of course, when I got there the boys, as usual, were starving. Unfortunately, they live outside a very small town with limited possibilities of fast-food options and I ended up going into town to pick up orders from a place I frequent for drinks but am not a fan of the food. It did not disappoint; it was as abysmal as I expected but it satisfied the boys so there's that. I got home at about 1 a.m. and crawled into bed.
A couple of the grands spent the night in the middle of the week, which is unusual, but we had fun playing games. Friday was granddaughter #1's pinning ceremony which was held at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. I had not been there since our kids were small many moons ago. I couldn't remember what it looked like back then, but I do remember it was just plain old Cowboy Hall of Fame in those days.
Have you noticed that everything seems to happen at once? We can go weeks with nothing much to do then–BAM–there's so much that we end up doing almost nothing. Friday-Sunday was the annual Arts for All Festival here in Lawton which we were unable to attend due to time constraints. It was also the annual volunteer firefighters fundraiser in nearby Elgin called Crawds and Rods. If you don't know what Crawds are, you probably don't want to. The 'rods' refers to hotrods. We've never attended but we need to make the effort sometime. Maybe next year. But probably not. Also, Saturday our son and daughter-in-law hosted a Mother's Day lunch for me since we'd be busy Sunday. He made chicken spaghetti and garlic toast then, while David and our son watched softball, the rest of us played games. I got my tuchus whooped, as usual, but it was a lot of fun.
Sunday, Mother's Day, we attended our granddaughter's graduation from the University of Oklahoma College of Nursing at the Lloyd Noble Center. Although it had been a rainy weekend, we were blessed to have it abate when we needed it to. After the ceremony and lots of picture-taking, we congregated at our granddaughter's new home for a cookout of hamburgers, hot dogs, brats, potato salad, pasta salad, deviled eggs, chips, strawberry cake, and banana pudding. It was a feast fit for a very proud family. We're happy but exhausted, as usual.
