Deep Cleaning is a Chore

It's amazing what one can find when one starts deep cleaning a room that's basically been a storage dump for the last several months.

With my treatments, it doesn't take much to zap my energy but I've been feeling good lately, so I decided I was ready to tackle my office. Still haven't gotten the nerve to open the door to my craft (aka Fibber's) closet but one day, soon, maybe.

While tackling this colossal project, I concluded I (a) should not wait so long before deep cleaning, (b) need to convince myself I must be brutal when it comes to letting go and (c) really, really need to give up sugar (I think it's a real energy zapper). That last one may be the hardest although a and b come in a close second.

After I finished (to the best of my ability) cleaning the cabinet I mentioned in last week's column I started on my rolltop desk. So far, I've found the other half of the baby monitor so I can now listen to my laundry. Why would I want to do that you ask? Well, I'll tell ya. It's easy to hear the washing machine since it plays a nice little tune when it's done; the dryer barely makes a sound when it's finished. It just stops. With the monitor, I don't have to keep running into the laundry room to see if it has stopped since I take everything out and hang up or fold and put away my laundry as soon as the cycle stops. It's frustrating not to be able to hear the darn thing so that problem is solved.

Among the other treasures I found was my old fit bit. I had tossed the charging stand into the trash before I came across it which I found when I got distracted and dumped everything in my nightstand to go through. (This is why I have a hard time getting things done. I tend to zig-zag.) I dug the charger out of the trash, plugged in the fit bit and what do you know? It works. I have no use for it, but it works!

Next, I found an e-reader my sister bought me years ago. I found the charging cord among several boxes of cords and plugged it in. It works also! This is why I never throw away random cords and such. You never know when you'll find a need for it.

I have now cornered the market on pens and pencils. I went through a few hundred pens, scribbled on scrap paper to find which ones to pitch, and now have a desk drawer full of pens and pencils. I think I also have enough scratch pads to last us as long as the pens. No wonder I could never find anything to write on and usually used the back of an envelope which I'd promptly lose! They were hidden in my desk.

I found a cornet we bought for our daughter in 1989. I know this because the receipt, band book, and all the pieces are there. I don't remember her playing it.

I also located the first video camera David bought for me and my first fancy typewriter complete with a spare ribbon. When I get finished organizing my office I might crack it out and give it a go along with the Sears Personal Electronic Printer we bought for Stefanie when she went to college. It was fancier than my typewriter with a display to see what you were typing; very upto- date at the time. I think it belongs in a museum now. LOL.

Anyway, I think I'll delay delving into my craft closet for a few more days. I just don't think I have that kind of energy yet. Our grandsons have volunteered to help because they love to help me, but I think this is a one-woman job–darn it.

Wish me luck on my journey to simplify my life. I'm going to need it since I'll be taking on the other rooms, one by one, as long as my nerves and energy hold out.

This time it was not a dream.
