I recently had the opportunity to visit Normandy, France to take part in the National Conference of State Legislatures’ Executive Leadership Development program. I joined about 40 other members of the Oklahoma House of Representatives and many of their spouses for the trip.
The week centered on the lessons of D-Day: June 6, 1944. This was a pivotal moment in World War II where allied forces working together brought a true turning point in the war against fascism. The leadership program sought to strengthen our understanding of teamwork and legislative service through the study of the history and heroism displayed on one of the most important events in world history.
During the program, I was able to explore the beaches of Normandy where the heroes of DDay landed as well as other hallowed sites. All of this framed what it takes to be a truly extraordinary public servant and leader. One of the most poignant moments of the trip came when we visited the Normandy American Cemetery where over 9,300 American service men and women are buried. Standing amidst the white marble cross grave markers of so many American heroes brought a visceral sense of the sacrifices made so that we could continue to live in freedom in our beloved nation. I am forever grateful to those who serve in our nation's armed forces and especially to those who paid the ultimate price.
During the week, we explored five principles of leadership: courage, imagination, responsibility, risk-taking and sacrifice – all on full display on D-Day. We spent mornings in classroom discussions and afternoons exploring key historical sites. The combination of the intellectual exchange of ideas against the backdrop of actual battle sites put into better perspective how teams are forged often through the tests of adversity.
I'm incredibly grateful I got to go on this trip. The lessons learned and the memories made will stay with me for the rest of my life. I truly believe they will help me be a better servant leader to those in my House district and in our state.
