Dear Editor: I want to thank the community for their support of veterans and Veterans Day. I appreciated the moving ceremony at the high school. Those who planned the ceremony are to be congratulated. There were special coffee and desserts prepared, and a special place of honor for veterans seated on the floor of the high school gym. Numerous students were involved in giving a variety of remembrances and appreciations for those who have served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard.
During times of war, other uniformed service members also serve as military personnel including the Public Health Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Having worked with many of these PHS officers at the NIH and CDC, I personally offer my appreciation to them as well.
The Eagle Band’s renditions of the Armed Forces Medley and America the Beautiful was inspiring. The number of “Watonga’s Hometown Heroes” service personnel from or related to Watonga students/ staff over the years was impressive in the quality of their service.
Two other moving moments were the presentation by the son of Mrs. Coney, staff sergeant Jake Coney, an active-duty Air Force member. His words on “What does Service Mean” merited a standing ovation from students, and especially veterans. The folding of the American flag and playing of taps reminds us that “All gave some, and some gave all”.
Then in the community, I was pleasantly surprised that breakfast at the Hot Dog Joint was at no charge to veterans. At Tractor Supply there was a special discount, and late in the day, Doc’s grocery was still offering a free lunch to veterans. The American Legion Post hosted a dinner for veterans on Nov. 13. I am sure that other businesses also recognized veterans, but these are a couple of which I am aware.
So, thank you Watonga for recognizing veterans who have served our great country.
