I hope all you fathers out there enjoyed your day with family and friends this past Sunday. I know my husband did. It turned out to be a funfilled weekend for us full of laughter as we watched the kids splash around in a inflatable pool. The festivities commenced on Friday with a joint birthday bash for five of the birthday boys born in June at our son's farm. He made the best brisket I've ever tasted. He purchased a smoker a few years ago and it has not gone to waste. It was a hot, sunny day but our son has a covered patio big enough to accommodate several dozen people. I set my portable air conditioner to blow on me which made it bearable.
It was a relief for me knowing the birthdays were celebrated all at once instead of separately, plus Father's Day. I was prepared, presentwise, which is not always the case for me, so I was able to relax and enjoy the festivities. I made two cakes, angel food, with two types of glazes, but left the rest of the baking up to our very talented granddaughter, Brenica. (I don't think there's anything that girl can't do. She cuts her brothers' hair, grooms their dogs and takes care of the dozens of farm animals they have including three baby lambs.) She made each of the boys their own favorite flavor of cake then momma sat each cake, one at a time, on the kitchen bar, lit the candles and we sang “Happy Birthday” five times. It's a good thing they don't have any nearby neighbors who might have been alarmed at the cacophony.
By the time we got home we were content but the best kind of worn out.
Thank goodness Saturday was a relax and recoup day for us.
On Sunday our daughter, son-in-law and granddaughters came for lunch to celebrate with dad and boy was it yummy. Our son-in-law, Jeff, has become quite the top chef. He made smash burgers with cheese and grilled onions on the outdoor griddle while I contributed the potato salad, deviled eggs and two homemade cheesecakes. Jeff loves cheesecake, but David thinks they contain way too much cheese and prefers the boxed kind that doesn't require baking.
It doesn't get any better than being able to celebrate special occasions with family.
