Adventures in Free Motion Quilting

Dang it. If something can go wrong, it will go wrong for me. I'm thinking of changing the title of ‘Murphy's Law' to 'Debi's Law'. Or maybe the 'Peter Principle' would apply in this case. Maybe straight lines are all I'm good at. Other's quilting designs look awesome. Mine looked like I had too much wine. It might take me the next two months, but I will get our daughter's quilt done. It may not be perfect, but it will be stitched with love. I've never done much more than straight stitching and patching so this is turning into an adventure.

I finally found the time to get back to my new machine and decided I needed to try and see if I could do free motion quilting pattern on my “Fruit Stripe Gum” quilt. I knew I'd never be able to do it by free hand at first, so I went to my favorite big box store on the internet and found a pattern. I ordered, it came the next day and, darn it, wouldn't you know I'd forgotten to order the powder (that looks like ground up chalk) needed so I ordered that, and it arrived the next day. I filled the thing that looks like a chalk board eraser, placed the pattern on the quilt and proceeded to pound the eraser onto the quilt. I couldn't see it too well, so I pounded a little harder. That dang dust flies everywhere. Next time maybe I should try laying the quilt on the floor. The problem with that idea is getting back up. It's not so easy anymore.

Now I was ready, or so I thought. I was so proud of myself thinking I'd conquered the selfthreader but NOOO. I sat down today, decided on a thread color to try out free motioning and nope it's not going to take the thread. I tried moving the needle both ways and still nope, so I hand threaded it. I've also found out that the thread I purchased that clearly reads 'quilt thread' on the label is not what this machine likes. I should have known it wasn't going to cooperate when I needed to wind a bobbin in a matching color and ended up with another tangled mess. How does that happen? This time I followed the instructions exactly; didn't miss a step and BOOM I have another wasted tangled mess that used up I don't know how many yards of thread. I now own three useless bobbins of thread. I hate to waste that much thread, or I'd just yank it all off and start over. I tell myself I'll grab a bobbin whenever I need some thread for hand sewing. But we all know with my memory I may or may not remember. Well, I guess it's back to my good old standby SideWinder portable bobbin winder. It never let me down.

Wish me luck. I need it.
