SENIOR CENTER NEWS

Thanksgiving is only one week away. It seems that this year has flown by. Are you ready for Turkey Day? If it wasn’t for a determined woman, Sarah Josepha Hale, Thanksgiving wouldn’t exist today. Her determination began in 1827 and she hoped to make Thanksgiving a permanent American custom and institution. It wasn’t until 1863 that President Abraham Lincoln declared it a national holiday. Some think that in the midst of the Civil War, it was an attempt to bring some peace back to our country.

Thinking of meals, our menu for the next week is as follows: Monday -- Chili and Soup Tuesday-- Chicken Strips Wednesday—Kiwanis will not meet, ham and sweet potatoes Thursday, Nov. 28 -- Closed Friday-- Closed We eat Monday and Tuesday of this week from 11a.m. to 12:30 p.m. On Wednesday, we usually eat at 11 a.m. because of the Kiwanis meeting at noon, but they do not meet on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Call before 10 a.m. daily for home delivery.

At 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23, we will have fun and games night at the center. Everyone is invited to come and bring a snack to share and enjoy cards, dominoes and live music. We are done by 9 p.m.

Our deliveries were made last week by Haily Boden, Sharon Barnes, Curt and Brenda Stein, Janice Hood and Vernon Brickman. Many thanks to them.

Donations were made by the Poarch Reunion Fund for Judy Curtin; Ray and Suzanne Wasniak for Tim and Judy Curtin; Mae and Jim Thompson for Judy Curtin; and Janice Hood for Judy Curtin.

Our quilters started a new quilt belonging to Janice Hood. Those quilting were: Louise Cooper, Margarett Parman, Estalene Teply, Connie Burcham and Janice Hood. This is a learning experience and if interested, come join the others. Hand-quilting is an interesting art and could be just the thing for you to do this winter!

We continue to exercise on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays at 9 a.m. and we welcome everyone.

The Friday after Thanksgiving is Black Friday, Saturday is Small Business Saturday, and the next Monday is Cyber Monday. All of these introduce the Christmas holiday season. Here it comes, ready or not!

Happy Thanksgiving from the Watonga Senior Citizens Center!
