SENIOR CENTER NEWS

By Brenda Stein

We had a wonderful week, weatherwise, this past week. We can almost believe that spring is going to come. February was brutal and we are all glad it is over. Now we can begin to think of planting flowers and vegetables for the upcoming months’ enjoyment.

This weekend, March 9, will mark the beginning of Daylight Saving Time. It was originally started more than 100 years ago in 1918, during World War I to help conserve fuel and power and extend the workday. Congress repealed daylight saving time after WWI ended. It was enacted again in 1942 during World War II and repealed again in 1945. In 1966, the Uniform Time Act was passed, which re-established the twice-yearly time change. It happens on the second Sunday of March and ends on the first Sunday in November. Most people grumble about it, but it has not been repealed to date.

Our delivery personnel this week were Hailey Boden, Sharon Barnes, Brenda Stein, Janice Hood and Vernon Brickman. We appreciate this group of dedicated people.

Jim and Mae Thompson renewed their memberships this week. Membership is $15 per year.

Our quilters this week were: Louise Cooper, Margarett Parman, Martha White and Estalene Teply. They finished the quilt belonging to Janice Hood and it turned out beautifully. I understand there is a new quilt to be placed in the frame this week.

On Saturday, March 8, we will host Fun and Games Night at the Center from 6-9 p.m. Everyone is invited to bring a snack and enjoy games and live music.

Only four weeks until the Watonga Masonic Lodge is having its fundraiser for the Senior Citizen Center. We will be serving homemade chicken and noodles from 5- 7 p.m., with a cake auction at 6 p.m. Save that date, April 4!

Come exercise with us on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9 a.m. Learn to quilt or play cards—we always have something to do at the Watonga Senior Citizen Center.
