Hampton, Hursh Win Council Seats

April 1 was election day for municipalities in Blaine County and around the state.

Locally, there were four Watonga City Council seats up for grabs.

In Ward#1, Cheyenne Brown garnered 34 votes compared to Dylan Ford’s 153 and Roy Hampton’s 156. Tumara Moore was also a contender for the seat, coming in with 25.

This election is a winner- take-all format, meaning Hampton will be seated on the council April 15 if the election is certified on Friday.

There were only two contestants in Ward #2. Former city clerk Deborah McGee won going away with 222 compared to contender Robert Sawyer, who earned 144 Both Ward #1 and #2 are for four-year terms.

In Ward #4, Gerald Fortney came in second to longtime resident Howard Hursh 89 to 283, meaning Hursh will be seated on April 15.

The at-large position also had a full field. Verlen Bills, also a former city clerk, earned 89 votes compared to Trey Chapman’s 27, business owner Neal Riley’s 183and computer specialist Marcus Wray’s77, with Riley claiming the seat.

The Ward #4 seat and the at-large seat are to fill unexpired terms of two years each.

In nearby Geary, an entire council was voted in. Barbara Diercks earned 114 votes for a council seat representing Ward #1while Allison Carter earned 35. Diercks will fill the remaining two years of an unexpired term.

Ward # 2 saw Robert Haley gaining 59 votes compared to Ashley Hurst’s 51 and Tatum Wigington’s 46. Haley will be seated to the council for a four year term.

Ward #4 saw Kim Lewis vying with Darrla Golden for a four-year term, with Golden gaining the seat 107 votes to 51.

Seeking the mayor’s seat were Trey Carter with 6 votes, Lois Hicks with 68, Micah Penrod will lead the city for the remaining two years of an unexpired term. Diana Bryan was the lone contestant for the remainder of a two-year unexpired term and she will be seated by acclamation.

In Okeene, there were two candidates for two seats, Brian Bachmann and Amber Johannesmeyer McArthur. Each will serve a four year term.

In Hitchcock, there was a single candidate for two seats on the board of trustees. Steve Norris will be seated as he ran unopposed.

In the town of Canton, Roger Gibson, Greg Ryan and Jodi Nelson Vowell were vying for two four-year terms. .

Greenfield was looking to fill a four-year term and a two-year term. Timothy Head and Kenneth Scheihing were each running for the four year seat, with Scheihing winning outright.

In Longdale, Misty Mosqueda was the lone contender for a four-year term as treasurer. Michael Morris was a candidate for four-year term on the board of trustees, where there were two openings.

These results become official if they are certified on Friday
