SENIOR CENTER NEWS

By Brenda Stein

This Sunday is Easter. According to a fourth century ruling, Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring. This year the first full moon of spring occurred on April 12 at 8:22 p.m. March 22 is the earliest Easter can occur in any given year, and April 25 is the latest. If the first spring full moon happens to fall on a Sunday, Easter will be observed on the following Sunday. Let’s pray for continued spring weather for the holiday gathering of friends and family on Easter.

On our April 12 Saturday night of fun and games, 18 attended, enjoying live music by David Green and Tom Autry. Others enjoyed card games, dominoes, pool and snacks. The next Saturday gathering will be at 6 p.m. April 26.

Our meals were delivered last week by Susan Shrader, Connie George, Sharon Barnes, Curt and Brenda Stein, Janice Hood and Vernon Brickman. We are grateful for these folks!

Martha White was our quilter this week, and she is doing an excellent job.

Our upcoming menu is: Thursday, April 17 Liver and Onions Friday Fried Chicken Monday Chicken Strips Tuesday Steak Fingers Wednesday Roast Pork (Kiwanis Meet) Thursday, April 24 Ham and Sweet Potatoes Friday Roast Beef (Birthday Lunch) Remember, we eat each day, except Wednesday, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays we eat from 11 a.m. to noon, when Kiwanis meet. Call any morning before 10 a.m. for home delivery.

Also, on Friday, April 18 nurses from Mercy Hospital will be in about 9:45 to check blood pressures and glucose levels. This is a free service and open to the public.

We will discontinue Thursday morning biscuits and gravy after this month. With the rising cost of food and the low numbers of participants, we have to end this service. We will still serve on April 17 and 24.

We are averaging 15 to 20 ladies (and sometimes men) at our exercise class. I recently had physical therapy here at the Mercy Hospital, and the therapist was very impressed with the type and amount of exercises we do here. I even did some of the same PT exercises as the senior citizens do. It is good to keep moving and have fun at the same time.

During this Easter week, remember these related days, Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Good Friday are called “moveable feasts” because they are not fixed dates on the calendar. They are dated according to the moon’s phases. Until next week, keep cool and be kind.
