SENIOR CENTER NEWS

Hello from the Watonga Senior Citizens Center. I hope everyone has survived the rain and thunderstorms. We welcome the rain and are grateful we have received no hail. Yards and flower beds, as well as gardens, are really looking wonderful.

Come join us for our springtime menu: Thursday, May 8 Goulash Friday Chicken Salad Sandwiches Monday Vegetable Soup or Chili Tuesday Spaghetti and Meatballs Wednesday Breaded Chicken Breast (Kiwanis meets) Thursday, May 15 Liver and Onions Friday Fried Chicken Meals are served each day, except Wednesday, when Kiwanis meets, from 11a.m. to 12:30 p.m. On Wednesdays, we eat from 11 a.m. to noon. Call any morning before 10 a.m. for home delivery. Our meals are still $7.

Our home deliveries were made last week by Hailey Boden, Sharon Barnes, Curt and Brenda Stein, Janice Hood and Vernon Brickman. We are very grateful for their services.

Our quilters this week were Estelene Teply and Louise Cooper.

We received two welcome donations this week: one from the Watonga Masonic Lodge for proceeds from our Chicken and Noodle Dinner; and the other from the family of Judy Curtin for proceeds from her estate sale. We are so pleased that we were blessed with these funds.

On Saturday, May 10, the Masonic Lodge of Watonga will hold its monthly breakfast at the Senior Center. This group really knows how to prepare a tasty and welcome start to our weekend. Come join them from 710 a.m.

That evening, the senior center will host Fun and Games from 6- 9 p.m. Bring a snack to share and play cards, dominos or pool; enjoy live music.

Don’t forget that the next day, Sunday, May 11, is Mother’s Day. It is always held on the second Sunday of May. This day was officially declared a U.S. holiday in 1914, thanks to Anna Jarvis, from West Virginia. Anna’s mother gave birth to 13 children, only four of whom survived, including Anna. This inspired Anna to begin hosting Mother’s Day Work Clubs to educate families on proper precautions, to prevent the spread of disease. Her hard work and determination lead to President Woodrow Wilson officially declaring the national holiday.

Many of us have lost our mothers but we always hold them dear in our hearts and have wonderful memories of them. If you are fortunate enough to still have your mother with you, do something nice for her and tell her you love her. Happy Mother’s Day!
