At the regular meeting Monday of the Watonga School Board, several projects were discussed that will continue to improve the campus and sports facilities.
Included were the items to finish the ongoing bond projects, like remote controls for the air conditioning and heating systems in the newly constructed gym and molding for the walls in the field house.
Work is continuing on the wrestling room, said Superintendent Kyle Hilterbran. The room is framed out but the mats haven’t arrived yet. Flooring has yet to be installed in the locker room there. One or more of the old locker rooms that are no longer in use because there are no washroom facilities have been repurposed into storage areas.
The track subsurface has been repaved and is waiting for the track surface to be laid. That work is anticipated in July, Hilterbran said.
There was also discussion on the northeast baseball field at Huff-Lorang Park.
The board is considering placing artificial turf on the field and installing a portable pitching mound and a moveable fence. This would allow the field to accommodate both fall fast pitch softball and spring baseball games.
The cost of the turf is about $1.3 million but if a lease purchase is exercised, it could be paid for over three years.
“I think it would make it easier for us to host tournaments there,” said board member Aaron Clewell. “It would help make those programs more sustainable,” he added.
