Legendary Barnsdall HS Coach Joe Gilbert Passes Away at 87

Longtime Barnsdall High School coach Joe Gilbert, who spent 66 years coaching the Panthers and Lady Panthers across six different sports, died at 87 on Monday morning in a Bartlesville hospital. Gilbert's victory totals are 1,140 in fast-pitch softball, 922 in girls’ basketball, 801 in baseball, 649 in boys’ basketball, 395 in slow-pitch softball, and five in football (one year — 1980).

Scholarship Offered for Graduated Student Athletes

The Watonga Republican/Geary Star is dedicated to helping youth achieve a stronger foundation for future learning and career selection. As promised, the newspaper will award multiple scholarships this summer to outgoing WHS and GHS graduates who played sports during their senior year. This comes thanks to sports sponsorships from local businesses throughout the 2019-20 school year.

Boys’ Summer Pride Suspended

Both Watonga high school and junior high athletics for the Eagles’ boys have been suspended until July 8 after one player tested positive for COVID-19 prior to a Summer Pride strength and conditioning workout last week.

Jackson, Rinehart Nominated as VYPE All-Hub Football Selections

As Watonga High School varsity football continues its annual Summer Pride strength and conditioning in the morning in preparation for the 2020 season, it was announced that Eagles players Joe Jackson and Joe Rinehart have been nominated for the VYPE Oklahoma Preseason Cimarron Valley All-Area Team at their respective positions.
